Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our music room is a safe and fun place where my students make music together. They walk into the room, I grab my ukulele, and we sing hello to each other. Despite challenges they might have, I want my students to find comfort in music.

I teach every student in our school from pre-kindergarteners to 5th graders, nearly a total of 500 students, at a Title I elementary school in Washington Heights in Manhattan, New York City.

Many of my students come from a Hispanic background and are learning English. For most of them, our music class is the only opportunity for their music lessons. Therefore, I want to make our time together as meaningful as possible.

I am thrilled to be their new music teacher and to share my love of music with my students. Our school provides a safe learning environment for our students, and I will do my best to provide my young musicians with the right tools and opportunities.

My Project

My students and I are grateful for our spacious music room. When my students come to my room to learn music, I want them to take ownership of their learning, show respect, and be responsible. One of the ways to increase student responsibility in my classroom is to take care of our music room together. In fact, “Use Equipment Properly” is one of the five rules that my students are expected to follow.

My 491 students and I will greatly benefit from this high-quality Dyson vacuum to maintain a clean, healthy, and pleasant music room.

Having this cord-free powerful vacuum will help us quickly clean up when needed, especially the rug area, creating an asthma-safe classroom. I keep reminding my students that we share this room together with all other students from the school and that we have to maintain it and keep it clean as a co-owner.

Separately, I am taking over as a new music teacher at the school starting this 2017-18 academic year. I am very excited, but at the same time, I realized that I have a lot of work in terms of cleaning and organizing the room and the closets. So far, I have been using my personal mini-vacuum which I brought from home. As someone who teaches 26 classes, consisting of approximately 500 students, I strongly feel that establishing a well-organized and well-cleaned room is very important, and I have no doubt that having this Dyson vacuum will save me a lot of time and energy while doing that job for my well-deserving students.
