My Project

One of the most striking things about a third grade classroom is the range of talents and interests among the students. In that same classroom exists a wide range of reading knowledge. A few students may be working on early phonics, others will be enriching their writing craft by looking at mentor texts, and all students will be improving their vocabulary.

Access to excellent reading materials and instruction can help raise the next generation of readers and leaders.

Natalie Wexler (author of The Knowledge Gap) recently wrote about the sharp decline in children who read for pleasure. This is concerning because reading widely addresses so many needs in our society. Reading is essential for leading a choice-filled life. It also helps us develop empathy as we relate to varied characters. Finally, most proficient readers consider reading a joyful and transformative pastime.

In order to secure these immense benefits of reading, schools need materials that help reinforce reading skills with the earliest readers and expand the horizons of all readers. These texts are selected for just those purposes.
