My students need high precision balances for fine scale measurements.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Van Arsdale's classroom raised $399

My Students
I teach students about life, literally, about biological life. On a daily basis I share my passion with my AP Biology class through the topics of ecology, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, evolution, and anatomy.
I teach at a small Alaskan high school not far away from Anchorage.
My students are predominantly middle class, with a high percentage that are dependents of active duty military. About half of my students will have been in our school system since first grade, and the other half will not (or have not) spend all four years of their high school career in Alaska. Our school is both highly stable and highly transient. That dynamic creates a cohesion that, we like to think, leaves both groups of students better off for the mix.
My Project
In my Advanced Placement Biology class we spend over 50% of our week doing inquiry. Many of the labs I do require high precision measurements for mass. For example, currently my students are investigating the rates of primary production amongst different seeds. The changes in mass from seed to dried plant address a fundamental misconception in biology (where does the mass of a plant come from.) Currently I have two balance capable of measurements to 0.001 and 33 students in my class. This creates and untenable situation, with long lines for students.
This donation will improve the ability of my students to do true science inquiry.
It will put into my students hands tools that can empower the development of their skills as biologists.
