"I injoy reading alowd in class now. 'Rooftop' inspred me not to do what they did like sell drugs, run from cops, shoot dice for money, play like you got a gun."-- Juston, 9th grade student. Receiving the previous note from one of my toughest students has been one of the greatest moments of my teaching career. I teach 9th and 10th grade English in a high-need community-- a place where well-paying jobs are few and far between and the KKK regularly demonstrates in the courthouse parking lot. Our school is currently in its 4th year of being on the Arkansas "Academic Distress" list, but our end of course scores are steadily improving. We teachers have tried a million ways to get every student engaged in class... one way I have found to be very successful is to welcome Paul Volponi books into their lives. Paul Volponi is a former teacher (at Riker's Island!) who understands what draws in reluctant readers from an urban area. He has won several awards for young adult fiction, but most importantly my students loved reading "Rooftop" this year. Not only does Volponi's writing suck in students who usually do not enjoy reading, they even learn a lesson. From "Rooftop" even my roughest kids rethought their actions. I hope with additional novels by Paul Volponi my students will find more books that they just can't put down. Please help these students explore literature and find a love of reading. Increased reading levels and comprehension are the keys to success in their other classes and when they move on to college. So many of my students have found inspiration between Volponi's pages; please help me to continue this for additional students!
