A typical day room 112 consists of a 15-minute writing session, 20 minutes of reading and discussion, a 10 minute mini-lesson on relevant aspects of literary analysis, grammar, or vocabulary, and 5 minutes of bookkeeping and classroom logistics.
Honestly, I'm lucky to be teaching these particular kids.
They are self-motivated and intellectually curious. They are readers and thinkers and writers. And they are as diverse as any group in the country. They bring a whole spectrum of experiences and insights. They are tolerant and accepting of differences. Some are still learning the language. They remind me that there is indeed hope for the future.
My Project
These books will be used to build a USEFUL, RELEVANT, HIGH-INTEREST classroom library. Students will participate in reading circles, book clubs, and discussions groups. The ultimate goal is to have them leave my room in June with a love of books and an appreciation for the value of reading. Reading is particularly important for our English Language Learners.
I love where I teach.
We have excellent students, involved parents, strong faculty, and competent administrative leadership. That's honestly all true! What we don't have is money. As teachers, we have to rely on parent groups and other outside funding sources to get us the supplies we need. This set of contemporary Young Adult novels will be used to supplement the core reading curriculum of fiction and non-fiction "classics".
