My Students
As the teacher librarian , I consider the entire student body to be my students! One word to describe our school library is dynamic. This is because the library is used not only to promote literacy, but the space may be used for students who are writers one period and scientists the next! The students here range between 11-14 years old -- the perfect age to hone in on foundational skills, such as organization and studying, and build a strong foundation to become a lifelong reader. In preparation for high school, many of our students are exploring their interests through our selection of electives, getting the extra help they need from teachers during our weekly tutorial periods, checking out books on a regular basis, and engaging in our local community's extracurricular activities.
To support the vision of our school, our library is about learning and exploration.
Students see the library as the hub of our school-- a place where everyone belongs! The library is a safe place for all students, so my goal is to maintain the integrity of our space, while also showing students that the library also functions as an another classroom on our campus.
My Project
One goal of the Iron Horse Middle School Library is to help students stay active in their reading lives by offering a wide selection of engaging titles that meet readers' interests! To accomplish this during our unusual time of remote learning, the Iron Horse Middle School Library is offering curbside pick up for library books. This service gets books in students' hands, which is crucial, especially in our current time of remote learning, as reading helps students to avoid academic slide and continue developing strong reading lives. To best promote interest reading and keep students engaged as readers, we need to keep the collection up to date with engaging books!
I often hear that students don't read because they find it boring, but what this actually means it they just haven't found the right book yet!
My goal is to help every student find the right book for themselves by providing a library collection with high-interest, exciting, and trending titles! The titles I selected for this project fit this description perfectly. Also, I utilize a Google Form survey to receive students' input about book purchases, and several of the titles in this project reflect students' recent requests, such as books one and two from the "Bravelands" series and "The Search for Wondla". I am looking forward to matching students with all these amazing titles when this project is funded!
