My Project

I teach fourth grade literacy in Chicago Public Schools, and with a combination of the pandemic, underfunding, and general struggles in the education system, my students show a low level of interest and engagement in the JOY of reading. By obtaining more books where they can see themselves reflected in the characters, I hope to "hook" them on good books and reintroduce them to the JOY of reading.

Reading also serves as the building block to much of learning, and diving into a good book is also a great way to manage the big feelings many of our students are struggling with.

Identities can be built and explored through books, and seeing oneself in a character is an affirming experience. With two fourth grade classes made up of a diverse group students - both those born in the United, and from Africa and Central/South America - having a diverse selection of books will help me to fuel my biggest goal (and challenge) of the year: GET KIDS READING FOR JOY!
