My students need eye-catching books that make them want to read!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students do not own books. Many are English Language Learners and are socio-economically disadvantaged. A classroom library is like a home library in their home-away-from-home.
They are beginning to cozy up to books like "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and "Dork Diaries" and Percy Jackson.
Let's give them more of these. They want to read. Let's get books in their hands!
Thanks to prior donations, I am well on my way to having a robust classroom library of high-interest titles!
My Project
Too often, struggling readers stop reading in middle school. They are too old for picture books, many struggle to read at grade-level, and they lose interest. When I taught high school, I would ask my kids when they last really read a book (not pretending to read one), and many said elementary school.
Let's change that!
Nowadays, there are some great graphic novels and other high-interest books that grab the attention of middle years' kids. Let's get them reading again, and keep them reading.
Now that I am three weeks into the school year, I have a better idea of the kinds of books my students like. They want graphic novels like "Ghost" and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and series like Percy Jackson. Let's make that happen for them!
