Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 26 eager and excited fourth graders. They all come to school ready to learn, no matter the challenges they face at home. They are a diverse group of students from low-income backgrounds who speak multiple languages, play sports, have different interests and talents, and are excited to gain new knowledge each day.

They are passionate about making a difference in the world through many channels.

My students see how current issues in the world are impacting them, their families, and communities, and they are ready to take charge in having their voices heard. Although they are 9 and 10 years old, they are ready to create change and be social activists.

My Project

Our classroom library is in need of new texts, specifically these high interest graphic novels. These books would be used during independent reading, and partner reading at school. Students will find a cozy spot in the room to read these graphic novels, while I am teaching small groups. Students also will be allowed to check them out of our classroom library to take home and read.

The texts being requested are high interest books that students WANT to read.

Many times when students say they do not like to read it is because they haven't found a series or book that has captured their interest. The book series being requested are the most requested books in our school library every year. However our school library only has 1-2 copies of each book and they are shared between 400 students. Having copies in our classroom library will allow students more access to these texts and it will help continue their engagement in reading because they will not have to wait weeks or months to get the next text in the series.

This project would give our class access to these titles and allow them to continue their passion for reading.
