First grade is such a huge year for learning. They come in as little kindergarteners and leave as big second graders. The amount they learn in first grade can arguably be the most a student learns in one year in their entire educational career. They learn how to read, write, add, subtract, and how to be in charge of their learning.
I teach in a low-income public school and am a dual language teacher.
I have 2 classes of students that come to me to learn math and literacy in English. My partner teaches literacy, science and social studies in Spanish. Because I am in a low-income school, many of my students come to school without adequate knowledge and experiences. They have a lot of catching up to do compared to a typical student. My goal is to do everything I can to decrease that gap and instill in them a love of learning.
My Project
Our students are returning to school soon. We need materials that will help them be safe and successful at school. Our first grade classrooms need additional whiteboards, markers, and erasers. This is our most used tool, and we need students to have them at home and at school.
We also need books to read to our students about what school during Covid-19 will look like.
We have chosen books about social distancing, wearing masks, washing hands, and germs. We will share these books between our 4 classrooms.
We also need extra staying healthy supplies. We'd like to have extra gloves and hand sanitizer, as well as additional masks students can use if they forget one or something happens to theirs. These are all precautions we want to keep all of us healthy.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
