My Students

My students are 9 and 10 year old beautiful children. They are just starting 5th grade and on the way to entering a new era; Junior High School. They are wonderful people with varied talents and together they work amazingly well to help each other reach goals. Our school is an inner-city, multicultural, low income, Title I school. I hope to help them improve their lives.

"If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow." - John Dewey.

My Project

I love to use positive reinforcement in my classroom! It really does work wonders in creating a classroom environment that fosters respect and kindness.

To make positive changes, students need a clear idea of what positive behavior is and to be positively reinforced when they demonstrate that behavior.

I do this is by giving “High Fives”. Students trace their hand on paper, write their name, cut out and place on a bulletin board. When I give a high five, the student walks to the board and places a sticker on one finger of their cut-out. Five stickers equals a prize from our prize box. When the hand is completed (25 stickers) the student gets two prizes and flips the hand over to start over. I explain that high fives are random and given to whomever I catch doing the right thing such as acting kind, helping others, staying on task, showing attention and other positive behavior. I do not give high fives for academics and students cannot ask for one.

There are many ways that I give positive reinforcement including praise, private conversations and activities or privileges. However, the high five method has consistently been a favorite. Many former students reminisce about how they loved the prize box. If I made them feel rewarded for positive behavior then that makes me happy. In today’s increasingly worrisome world, a little praise shows reinforcement for the behavior we all want to see in our world. Hopefully when they leave my class they will take with them the idea that having a positive mindset is beneficial and feels good. Of course all of those prizes are costly. I would love some financial help to offer amazing incentives this year and help my students realize that doing the right thing pays off!!
