My Project

My project helps students learn about compassion in a very practical way. In my opinion modeling and reinforcing compassionate behavior in action, is the best way to teach it. Reading about compassion is great but often difficult for students to truly understand this abstract concept. I've recently read that compassion is like a muscle, it gets stronger the more it is practiced.

Using positive reinforcement in my classroom helps create a classroom environment that fosters kindness and compassion.

It helps students recognize what it means to understand another persons feelings by acknowledging when it's done. The more compassionate behavior is practice the easier and more natural it will become. My students and I create a "High Five" bulletin board. High Fives are given to whomever I catch acting kind, helping others in need such a student in the classroom who may be struggling, and other positive behavior towards each other. A High Five = 1 sticker on a hand cut-out. Five stickers equals a prize box reward and a step towards successful understanding of compassion. This helps strengthen the compassion muscle. The process continues until both sides of the hand cut-out is filled.

Printer ink will help me create a print-rich environment with relevant, positive messages, quotes and discussion stems, to display to help students find the words and phrases they can use as well as act as reminder to practice kindness everyday.

Making kindness and compassion a priority will help students understand how the words they use and actions they take impacts classroom environment. I believe that by the end of the year, my students will have a better understanding of how to show compassion and will learn to treat others with respect and generosity not only in our classroom community but outside the classroom and throughout their lives.
