Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are as diverse as New York City. They come from all five boroughs and many cultural backgrounds. Half are from low income households. What they have in common is a love of their city, its harbor and the ocean.

My students work hands-on to restore NY Harbor back to a thriving and diverse ecosystem.

They plan, design, build, and deliver real ecosystem restoration by working to restore oysters to New York Harbor. A challenge they have faced with remote learning is missing that on-location component.

My Project

Issues of environmental (in)justice disproportionately affect some communities in New York City. These areas have been shaped by historical decisions and tend to be more vulnerable to current challenges, such as increasing flooding due to climate change and food insecurity. I would like to bring my students into NYC neighborhoods so they can see first hand how these issues affect their fellow New Yorkers. I will to plan, shoot and make short movies so that I can bring the field trips to them wherever they are.

Learning the environmental history and science behind some of New York City’s most susceptible areas will empower the next generation of citizens to drive change in these areas where it would mean the most.

Learning from home has had it’s challenges for my students, who thrive on learning outdoors in New York Harbor. This project will allow me to bring on-location learning to them, wherever they are with tours of locations in each borough that are facing challenges surrounding environmental (in)justice.
