My Students

My students are in a constant battle to debunk all odds against them. In an area known for low academic performance and graduation rate, these future scientist show grit everyday to make their dreams come true.

As a result of just their environment, few experience the type of hands-on education that inspires a lifelong passion for learning.

Coming from a community where 99% is African-American and all of whom receive free or reduced lunch, they have very little financial resources available to their community. Despite the many socio-economic obstacles, they have developed into brilliant scholars leading the school to Tier 1 among DC Public Charter Schools. My students have not only worked hard maintaining 3.0 GPAs, but have worked months to cover their own registration fees. It is my hope that fundraising the remainder of the money on DonorsChoose.org will make this trip a reality for all 16 of our selected scholars

My Project

Hidden Figures will embark on an once-in-a-lifetime adventure through WorldStrides “Habitat H2O” 5-day Tampa, Florida tour. Students will be exposed to one of the aquatic biomes examined in their STEM coursework. During this 5-day adventure, students will have the opportunity to interact with other US middle school students enrolled with WorldStrides as they fly to Tampa; snorkel with the Manatees in the Crystal River; explore endemic species at Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park; and participate in shark dissections at Fort DeSoto. Selected scholars are well on their way to a path of academic success, making this trip a wonderful opportunity for them to develop their skills to become influential leaders in the community around them. WorldStrides will cover all airfare, lodging, meals, insurance, and excursion costs. This is a remarkable opportunity for my students!

Many of my students have lived in DC their entire lives and have never stepped foot on the National Mall surrounding the Capitol and monument.

This trip reveals to students the size and complexity of the world around them while critically thinking as scientist with students across the nation. All 16 of our scholars understand their obligation to make the most of the opportunity and develop into influential learners. Funding this project will not only change the lives of the students in a deep meaningful way, but also inspire the community around them.
