Hickory Dickory Dock, May Their Ability To Read Grow Nonstop!
Help me give my students the basic skills needed for reading. The 'Touch Read Phonics Set' specifically will be a dynamic tool, to learn, re-learn, these key but harder to grasp skills for kids with special needs.

My Students
My students live in the 2nd poorest zip code in NYC. Some, but not all, are in foster care, live in shelters, or in government housing. They have experienced more than they should have to, but they still let joy and hope and curiosity into their little hearts every day. My 30 plus students range in age from 4 to 13 years old, with various learning disorders. I am their SLP and provide their speech and language therapy. My students are diagnosed with Intellectual Disability, Autism, Emotional Disturbance, and other language disorders like Dyslexia. Having the materials I need to help them feel safe and engaged would go a long way in helping them meet their goals and confidence much sooner. Every child deserves a voice!
My Project
All of my students are students with special needs. They have diagnosed language disorders. Language disorders impair the comprehension and use of written, spoken, or non-verbal communication. My students have diagnoses that include dyslexia, autism, and intellectual disability. Here's a sobering data point. According to the National Adult Literacy Survey, 70% of incarcerated adults cannot read at a 4th grade level. Children with language disorders are over-represented in prison populations. Too many of my students currently read 2-3 or more grade levels below their actual grade. Please help me empower them by helping them to meet their potential and beat these unkind statistics.
I want their future to be as bright as their eyes will be when we welcome them to the first day of school in a few days.
The materials in this project will specifically target decoding and encoding letters, blends (like br-, st-, thr-, ph-), word families, narrative building and deconstruction, and other key skills that undergird literacy. My students who have an Intellectual Disability have an especially difficult time with comprehension at the spoken and written level. Answering ‘who’ or ‘what’ questions pose a significant challenge because they do not understand what those labels mean in addition to having a smaller vocabulary. The items in this project will help in the student’s lives outside of school. Things like understanding instructions, asking for help, and self-advocacy are important skills they need
These materials including the sensory seats will make it so much easier for the children to relax, feel safe, and engage confidently with age and ability appropriate materials. We know that language and literacy skills underpin academic, social, and vocational success. So please help them stay in school, help me help them to read. Thank you.
