Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at our school are a special group of middle school students. If you have ever met a middle school student then you know that often they are filled with an amount of energy and curiosity that, if tapped, could power a small town. Many of my students' families struggle to support their child's well being and significant numbers of my students are recent immigrants. Our school is faced with meeting the needs of a diverse student population that is consistently struggling financially and academically at-risk.

This has not hampered our students' eagerness and desire to learn and our teachers' devotion to teach, but our school needs as much help as it can get.

Many of these students struggle to make it to class on time because they are trying to get their younger siblings ready for school. Many of my students are often a major caregiver for their younger siblings.

My Project

Last year, together, we raised enough money to get twelve computers in my classroom because of your generosity and the miracle that is DonorsChoose. Those computers have allowed for my students to get online and access reading programs, do research for projects, and type up their papers.

I only have twelve laptops in my classroom when my classes have anywhere from 24 to 26 students.

More working computers in my school means letting more students have access to programs like DuoLingo. Today I had to cover a class, and when you have to cover a class it is never fun. The class I was covering was for the Spanish teacher that was out. So what I did was I brought the kids to my room and gave them the laptops and had them access Duolingo and start working. I've never seen them so interested; covering the class was actually fun for myself AND my students. They were glued to the program, but I had to let students take turns and share the computers. I let some of my English Language Learners use it to access Duolingo during their lunch period so that they can improve their vocabulary. With six more computers I can allow even more students to become more familiar with how technology can benefit their learning.
