My Students

I work in an urban district in Pennsylvania and I teach first grade. I teach in a school that gives 100 % free meals to students. This means the area I teach in is a high poverty area.

While my children often need assistance with supplies for school; they deserve a rich learning environment.

I provide the best environment I can because my students are amazing.

My students crave learning and want to know everything that they can learn. First grade is vital to learning how to read and basic math concepts. We also learn about people and communities around the world ,as well as working together with each other.

My Project

A carpet in a classroom is a place of grounding for the students and teacher. We use the carpet for a variety of reasons. The carpet has rows and colors so its a teachable lesson within itself. It will reinforce colors and it will teach the children basic graphing skills. They will need to know their color but also which row they sit in and which column.

Besides graphing skills, the carpet has an even more important purpose; the sense of community amongst friends.This is a space where I meet with my students to have social, emotional learning meetings and circle time.

During this time especially, children need to talk and feel loved and part of something that is stable and consistent in their lives. SEL (Social, emotional learning ) is a time for us to have these discussions and learn about how to deal with their feelings.

Circle time is a time for learning about such things as the weather, the date, and important messages for the day. The carpet is also used as a space for us to read a book together and for the children to have a comfy place to read independently.
