Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 9th grade Biology teacher who is trying to improve his school's science curriculum. Most of my students come from families that are at or near poverty level. These students are also the first in their families to have an opportunity to attend college.

Science is one of those subjects that could be fun because students get to do labs. However in my class, most of the labs that the students do are paper labs, which means that the students do a lot of cutting, coloring and pasting. Not a lot of science stuff. With the exception of a few labs that involve microscopes, my students do not get the opportunity to use scientific equipment.

What I want to do is get these students interested in science. Last year my students became very interested in genetic engineering, but when we did a simulation using a "paper lab" the students quickly lost interest. What I want to do is have my students this year actually do some genetic engineering. The lab is simple because it comes in a kit, however it requires a centrifuge. My budget will cover the kit but not the centrifuge.

Imagine how these inner city students will feel when they successfully complete this lab and tell their family and friends that they created a new organism. Please donate to this project. Your donation will keep my students interest in science as well as in school. Thank you.
