My Students

Resilient, open-minded and kind. Those are the keywords I would use to describe the students in our school community. First and foremost, when treated with kindness and love, my students return back kindness and love. The kindness of teens always brightens my outlook for this country, especially in the face of the rise in hate. Resilience is an automatic trait for those living in a low-income urban community. I bet they learn it from their parents who have to work double for their kids in order to achieve the American Dream. Inspirational and energizing, even in their tough days, they do lift my spirits, especially when I myself am going through those anxious-driven days.

My students rise to high expectations.

I have seen my students go beyond what they thought they could do. I have seen their self-doubts shed and their confidence blossom. I have seen their belief in themselves grow. For instance, at the start of the year, very few view themselves as excellent essay writers or as community advocates or as outspoken debaters. Yet, by the end of the year, they are all those things and more.

My Project

"My country is the world, my countrymen is mankind." - William Lloyd Garrison, abolitionist advocate and newspaper editor

Garrison and fellow abolitionists embody the best of American values such as equality, tolerance and courage.

Students learn about several Abolitionist and Women's Suffrage advocates in a study of American heroism and tolerance. Students learn about Garrison, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, John Brown, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cary Stanton, Sojourner Truth, and Lucretia Mott through reading of primary documents and biographies. Students find inspiration in these everyday heroes who refused to be bystanders.

In the end, students create a life-sized portrait of their assigned hero and explain their heroic qualities in a creative and interactive way. Students advance their skills in creative writing and speaking while doing so in a memorable and engaging way.

The project consists of three parts. The requested oil pastels will be used for the first part, the artistic image of their heroic advocate. Second, they will write in first person form emphasizing one of their heroic qualities. For example, if their heroic advocate is brave the would write, "I had the guts to...", caring, "I cared about...", used their voice, "I used my powerful voice to...", and so on. Third, students present to the class from the perspective of their assigned heroic advocate. We are asking for Prismacolor NuPastel Color Stick Set. Everyone loves this project.
