Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

After teaching ESL abroad for the past 7 years, immigrating to the United States, and graduating with a California teaching credential, I am *finally* ready to welcome my first class of 19 students on American soil!

Take a peek inside our 4 walls and you will find the most richly diverse space where students are speaking multiple languages with multiple abilities across many races and ethnicities - all sharing one common goal - the pursuit of knowledge.

Our school is a K-5, Title I, public school, with a population of over 900 students with our entire school qualifying for the free breakfast and lunch program in a rural setting. With full bellies and eager minds, the students are ready to learn, engage, play, and grow. I am reaching out to all of you for help to ensure we have the right tools and supplies to have a successful year!

My Project

We practice Project-Based Learning in our classroom. We are currently researching "What makes someone a community hero?", and students will incorporate the arts to design a puppet that represents their chosen and researched hero.

Our elementary schools have a $0 budget on the arts as Art Teachers have been cut and funding has been slashed to $0; we have no paint, craft supplies, tools, or anything - it is crucial that art within the classroom and curriculum stay intact.

Students will preview a sample of heroes I have chosen and talk with their adults to choose a hero that is meaningful to them. They will research and write about their hero and then creating a culminating project where they design a puppet of their hero to bring the arts into social studies! Come back to see puppets of heroes such as César Chávez, Maya Angelou, Malala Yousafzai, or Anne Frank.
