Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach high school students in a small performing arts school in the Bronx. My students have been asking about getting a classroom pet since many are not allowed to have one in their own homes. We all agreed that hermit crabs would make an unusual, but very interesting classroom pet to learn more about.

Hermit crabs are a great addition to my science curriculum.

They can make wonderful classroom pets as students will enjoy exploring these fascinating critters. Managing the crabitat does involve a great deal of maintenance but the inquiry-based approach will help them learn a lot about animal life by watching these crabs through the cage. It can also be fun to decorate to take ownership of it. I also hope it will help with their social-emotional learning.
