This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from every corner of the world. My students are all English Language Learners (ELLs), and are a microcosm of Queens: they speak over a dozen languages and come from more than 20 countries. What unites us is a common pursuit of opportunity and community. This past year has hit us hard in so many ways. It made our strength - project-based collaboration - so difficult. Remote learning, social distancing, students juggling work and school to make ends meet: all conspired to keep us feel as distant as we were physically.

During the height of New York's infections in spring 2020, our school and their families were hit the hardest of any area in the country: Several staff and many students were infected.

We lost a staff member, and many students lost family to COVID-19. As the pandemic wanes, we all look forward to the day we will be back together in our classroom again.

My Project

Growing plants in the classroom is one of my favorite activities do with students. They learn how to grow their own food, and along the way learn about others' and their own culture through the plants they grow. They take care of a living thing, learning patience, empathy, and beauty. They record data as they would do in agricultural or scientific careers. They design experiments or engineer solutions to problems as they would in any STEM field. At the center of all of this is a plant cart we built to house all of our plants. It has been a wonderful tool for years but it has a huge downside - it runs on the same kind of inefficient, mercury-filled lightbulbs that were in use 50 years ago.

We need to replace the lights in our plant cart with efficient LEDs that can't break, don't contain mercury, and will last for years.

The bulbs I am asking for will replace these older bulbs, and will power the growth of much more than plants for years to come.
