Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Kindergarten at a Title I public school where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Some of the students live under stressful circumstances and come from low income families. Their parents are immigrants so they are trying to adjust to a new culture and they also do not speak English.

Kindergarteners are curious, inquisitive and eager to learn.

Due to COVID-19, some parents have lost their jobs. Some of these children do not have any background knowledge. In spite of their circumstances, I will provide my students with the materials needed to be successful.

The pandemic has made teachers change their way of teaching and adapt to distance learning. Although we still don’t know the details about how we will be teaching beginning in August, whether it be distance learning, in person, or a blended model, one thing is certain... I am looking forward to teaching my students and seeing their academic growth!

My Project

The books that I am requesting will be used every day in my classroom or through distance learning.

I would love for my students to build strong literacy skills and learn to love reading - With exciting fairy tales, children can’t resist!

These books will be used in a multitude of ways:

I will read their new and engaging books in a whole group setting, during listening centers, guided reading centers, and while using long distance platforms such as Big Blue Button or Canvas. No matter the way, when I am finished reading the story, I will ask my students to answer comprehension questions to make sure they understand the main idea, characters, and details of the story. I know they will especially enjoy hearing the words as they follow along while reading The Little Red Hen or The Three Little Pigs. After reading or listening to a book either individually, in a group, or at the listening center, students will write a few sentences in their journals and draw a picture showing what their favorite part of the story is.
