I am an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher who works with immigrant and refugee students in an urban middle school. We are always looking for ways to learn more about the world as we master new vocabulary and academic concepts.
I am requesting an assortment of items related to the ancient art of henna including seeds to germinate and grow our own henna plants in the classroom, books about henna art, and even a few henna paste supplies to model the process on a willing adult.
A face painting kit will allow us to experiment with a more temporary type of body art.
Recently, my students were learning about henna art. Students from Africa and the Middle East were sharing their experiences with henna art with students from other parts of the world. I showed the students a henna plant, and we read about the processing required to create henna paste. One of my students immediately asked if we could try growing some henna plants in our classroom.
Why not? When instruction and books are connected to topics students find engaging, learning happens! I'm looking forward to expanding this topic to help my students learn more about world geography and a variety of cultures.
