This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the art teacher in Dallas, Texas. I teach grade levels K-6. We are a title 1 school with very talented students. A project that I wanted to introduce to my 3rd through 6th graders is jewelry making. I have noticed that hemp jewelry is making a come back and the biggest consumers are school age children. I thought....I can teach my students to make bracelets, necklaces and keychains out of hemp and beads. After researching hemp fiber history, I realized this would be bigger than just "making jewelry".
My students will learn what hemp is, the ancient history of the crop and they would learn a skill of jewelry making; using macrame and adding glass or metal beads. Learning the skill of macrame and jewelry making will be one they will always remember and it will give them the capability of making their own sentimental jewelry without purchasing from a boutique. My students will posses a skill that few know, it will give them confidence that they can do something on their own and a gift no one could ever take away.
