Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Technology is the stairway to the future and my students need help taking their first steps. With two computers in the classroom - both broken - my students are not able to explore and broaden their knowledge in reading and math.

I work as a kindergarten teacher at a Title I public school with 92% of the students receiving reduced/free lunch.

Many of my students live under difficult circumstances. Some have no father figures and others must care for their siblings due to parent absence. They come to school with dirty clothes and inadequate school supplies. There is little parent involvement. The students come in to my classroom with absolutely no prior knowledge or learning experiences. The children, many times, come with not just physical but emotional needs, as well, because of neglect or abuse. Despite these obstacles, my students are very eager to learn. Given the right opportunities and resources, I know that they can be successful in their lives. A lot of my students have told me that they want to grow up to be policemen, firemen, and doctors. They have dreams and determination to reach their goals with the support of the school and the community.

My Project

The only computers that I have in my classroom are not functional. A new computer would give my children the opportunity to use online resources/websites to acquire reading, math, and science skills. In my previous years, when I had working computers, I saw that the children absolutely loved to go to the computer center and play educational games. Through these games, the students will be able to increase their phonics, spelling, counting, rhyming, addition/subtraction, science skills, and many more. It is a very fun way for them to acquire the knowledge they need to excel. When the children enter my classroom, the first thing they do is take out a sheet of paper with a pencil and start to write the poem of the week and spelling words. My kindergarteners use the 'fat pencils' to write to help them with their fine motor skills. The sharpener I have now, which is not electronic, does not sharpen the big pencils.

"Helping the Little Ones Succeed" will help my students integrate reading skills in all subject areas and help them develop oral language through speaking and listening activities.

These funded resources will motivate my students by making learning exciting; thus, they will incorporate what they learn into their long term memory. The use of audio-visual materials will help all of the students work at their own paces. My project will consider motivation as a crucial element of student learning.
