As a school counselor in a Title I school my students are faced with many challenges in and out of school. These challenges affect them academically, as well as personally and socially. Despite the challenges, I am looking to provide my students with meaningful learning opportunities that would not be afforded to them under their current circumstances. By exposing them to the positive benefits associated with technology, I am confident that the students will stay on the path of academic excellence!
Through the use of technology there are countless opportunities born that play a vital role in shaping our students academically, personally and socially, as well as equipping them for careers in the 21st century. With these Kindle Fire tablets we will be able to utilize apps from the Amazon App store and integrate it with the lesson that is being taught in class. Some examples of apps that can be used are as follow: 1) College Seeker - College and Career readiness begins in kindergarten. This free app allows students to search for colleges using different criteria, exposing them to higher education from the beginning of their elementary years. 2) Whiteboard- This free app gives students the ability to draw and express themselves digitally when they cannot find the words to share with others in regards to their feelings. 3) FOCUS 1-2-3 - This free app teaches students relaxation techniques when they find it difficult to calm down. 4) Photo Circle - This free app allows students to upload and share artwork and activities with students in another class. 5) Skype - This free app allows students to Skype with authors during career lessons. In addition to the aforementioned apps, I can also create exit tickets for students in order to determine the effectiveness of the classroom counseling session.
