Helping Students Shine!

Help me give my students the opportunity to shine in non-traditional ways. Students can show off their problem solving skills by solving puzzles or learn about statistics by reading books. These classroom supplies will help me encourage students.

My Students

My students are in grades 9-12. They are a diverse group but they are all interested in learning mathematics and pushing themselves with challenging math problems. My students love puzzles and alternate ways to challenge their brains.

Our high school is a five-year comprehensive high school of about 2000 students in grades 8-12 and is accredited by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

32% of the students are identified as low-income, 11% have a first language other than English, and 12% are identified as special education. Our high school serves seven different villages in our community.

My Project

Not all students excel at math in the paper and pencil tests and students have been told that they aren't good at math and problem solving. They need other forms to build their confidence and encourage their skills in alternate ways.

Students can show off their problem solving skills by solving challenging puzzles such as happy cubes and rubik's cubes.

Students love to play with manipulatives and often the students who are best with them are also those who don't perform as well on paper tests. It is awesome to see these students find success and be given the opportunity to brag about how they can solve puzzles.

Also included in this project are some books that I use with my statistics classes. Also, a way for students to shine in a math class. This allows students who love to read to learn about statistics through literature.
