My Students

“The greatest gift is a passion for reading. It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites, it gives you knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind. It is a moral illumination.” -Elizabeth Hardwick

I teach in an inner-city, low income school.

My class has 23 students and most students have English as their second language. They are enjoying learning to read and love to have their OWN materials. My students range from 5-6 years old and are excited to learn to read. I love to expose them to a variety of materials to engage them in the process of learning to read. I have found that they really enjoy non-fiction. I am hoping to provide each of them with their own non-fiction magazine to use at school and then home, to promote literacy in and out of school. I want them to have the passion of reading by helping them create their own stash of reading materials at home. My students are eager to learn to read but many don't have reading materials in their homes. Please help me get reading resources into their hands.

My Project

Students will be able to learn that there are different materials to read and take ownership of these magazines. Ownership is an important attribute that students need to learn. When they take ownership in their learning they understand the importance and pertinence of what they are doing. They will learn to read the magazines at school and then take them home to share with their families. I am hoping this will instill in them that it is important to have reading materials in their lives in and out of school to build their love of reading. It will also help families get print into their home. It may even help adults in the families learn the importance of reading with their children, while having their children share these magazines at home with excitement.

Many students do not have the resources to buy their own reading materials to have at home to practice reading.

I want to be able to help them build up reading materials to give them opportunities to read at home with their families. Please help me get reading into their homes and into their hearts to create lifelong learners!
