My Students

Every week, my students attend library class to engage with literature, research, and technology. I strive to make the library a place where students can build a love of reading, learning, and exploring the world around them.

Our library is not a place where children are shushed and told to be quiet at all times.

My students use every inch of the library - from the tables to the computers to the bookshelves to the carpet. They have fun, learn, collaborate, and explore with books, websites, games, and more! This large, light-filled space is just the place for young brains to grow.

My Project

The resources I need will help alleviate the strange year students had as they completed so much learning via screens. The standards I teach are new NVAC Library Standards, which incorporate concepts based in science, social studies, reading, writing, and researching, and all of these materials support these standards.

I'm asking for books to support social-emotional learning and books requested by students now that they can finally borrow books again (ES.5.T.1).

I'm requesting alphabet activities and play-doh for primary students to engage in group-based literacy centers (ES.3.T.2).

I requested board games and fact-based card games so students can develop vital critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in an in-person, engaging setting (ES.5.T.3; ES.5.G.2). Finally, I requested STEM and art materials so students can allow their creativity to flow when responding to stories, exploring their world, or sharing what they’ve learned from our research activities (ES.1.C.3; ES.3.C.1; ES.5.C.2).

After a year with so much isolation and time behind a screen, I want my students to feel like we are starting a new, enriching, and exciting phase of learning. If I can add materials to the library that will get the students interacting with each other, using hands-on resources in creative ways, and engaging in collaboration as they learn about the world, it will be a successful transition back to in-person learning. They deserve to learn this way now that we are face-to-face and trying to get back those vital social and interpersonal skills. Learning through play and exploration is the way to make this happen.
