Helping SPED Through Sensory and Visual Supports

Help me give my students access to suitable and strong fidgets to help them focus in the classroom, and cardstock so that I can create sturdy visual materials to help them access their curriculum and support transitions.

My Students

My students are thoughtful and curious, and interested in learning new things. Students at my school come from a high poverty level, which results in a high percentage of free and reduced lunch. Our school is also a personalized learning school; the idea of personalized learning is that ultimately each student moves forward at their own pace and at their own style so they can work on their strengths, but also work on their weaknesses. Personalized learning also involves using technology to teach students.

Learning is our passion, but for my students in my special education class, this can be difficult without additional visual supports and materials to support their unique sensory needs.

We have no budget to buy classroom materials and often as educators, we have to buy supplies ourselves. In order for my students to reach their full potential, I want to make sure I have visual supports and sensory items available for them to help them succeed in learning.

My Project

My students need access to sensory and visual supports daily in the classroom in order to be successful.

Most of my students are either nonverbal, or have minimal verbal skills, so providing visual supports is a must in our classroom.

We need cardstock to make sturdy visual supports that can be laminated and reused to help with transitions, expectations, and communication.

My students also need access to strong and sturdy fidgets that will hold up over time to their curiosity and interests. We have been graciously provided with the Tangled Jr. fidgets in the past, and they have been so well-loved in our room that they are now falling apart. While my students all do their best at listening and sitting at the table, this can be a challenge for some of them, and wiggle seats would provide wonderful sensory input for them to help make table tasks more successful.

We also need Play-Doh, which helps support their fine motor skills as well as additional academic skills when we pair it with alphabet or counting mats.

Thank you for your consideration in supporting our classroom!
