Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

On March 18th, I left my classroom never imagining that I would not return to my kindergarten students and would end the remainder of the school year teaching them remotely. I went into panic mode as I tried to see who had access to electronic devices, WiFi and even, who had supplies (such as pencils, paper and crayons) at home to continue their learning away from me. The school provided some devices and we were helping many parents apply for devices to be sent to their homes. Although they have received these devices, parents don’t have the knowledge to access all the required platforms and many don’t know how to use the devices. I also had to consider what I had at home to guide them and make lessons easily accessible to all. Many of the kids have tablets and it’s very hard to make video tutorials to guide them step by step when you’re using a laptop.

My Project

Remote teaching has been a challenge for teachers, students and parents alike. Teachers have had to scramble to learn about all the ways they can bring their lessons home to students.. Students have had to adapt to new routines and a completely new way of learning. Parents have taken on the role of a teacher.

One of the biggest challenges has been teaching parents how to use the devices and then guiding them to access and navigate the multiple learning platforms/applications being used to teach their kids at home.

Most of the kids have iPads and without one at home to reference, it has been difficult to make video tutorials. Also, it will help parents troubleshoot the daily hiccups that arise when helping their kids. You can only do so much providing un-personalized, YouTube videos (that are sometimes difficult to understand) or using an outdated laptop. With an iPad, I would be able to guide the parents step by step with a video using the same device they're using. This is especially helpful for the parents that can't read. The iPad would also help me provide much needed feedback faster, since we are sharing a laptop at home.
