My Project

This upcoming school year, I will be teaching a diverse group of kindergarteners. Some come from a preschool experience and some do not. I will also be blessed with multiple aides coming into the room throughout the day. My summer has been spent thinking of small group ways to utilize their time as well as mine, to maximize student retention of the most essential kindergarten skills. One of my major tasks in preparing the children to enter first grade next year will be to acquaint them with the proper formation of the alphabet. To do this with such young children, more than paper and pencils is required.

Through this project, I hope to provide my incoming students with a set of tools that will allow them to practice proper letter formation use a variety of tools and formats to keep learning fresh and to address all learning styles.

These enjoyable activities I hope to provide will simultaneously build student fine motor skills required to use scissors and writing utensils adeptly and the creativity and flexibility of engineering when constructing letters using a variety of materials. These additional tools will provide children a larger range of practice (tracing, magnets, constructing with partial pieces, and fine motor work with tweezers) than pencil and paper or dry erase work alone.

It is my hope to have them practicing letter formation independently with these engaging activities as I run small, targeted reading groups. This will maximize our ELA block time and build student stamina and independence which are so important for their careers as students.
