Like with any school, our students come from very economically diverse households and backgrounds. Fortunately some of our students show up every morning well groomed, well rested and ready for their day. While on the other hand, we have students who come into our building unkept and obviously needing some parental care and grooming.
Unfortunately, these are the same students whose teachers contact us asking what can be done to assist them with their hygiene.
Our students are resilient and resourceful young people who deserve care and time to help them to become strong, independent adults. Many of them have younger siblings that they care for so they learn to cook and clean at a very early age. Many of our students live in unfortunate situations which causes them to have to care for themselves. Our students need help, they need proper everyday information to assist them in self care and grooming, things most of us take for granted.
Our school is PreK through 5th grade. The parent liaison and myself (the counselor) are developing a curriculum which is age appropriate for every grade level. We will spend time in each classroom with videos and experts zooming in to educate the students about proper dental hygiene as well as overall self care. The older students will actually learn how to wash and dry their own clothing without a washer/dryer. The parents will receive handouts explaining to them what their students will be learning with activities for them to follow up with the students. So often times, we become frustrated by things we can't change, at Van Buren Elementary we have decided to put our energy into the things we can change. We can educate the students about self care which in turn empowers them to be in charge over the cleanliness of their own bodies.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
