Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are from a low-income and high needs area in the Bronx. They are of diverse cultures and speak a variety of languages at home. A large problem with lower level learners is that they sometimes feel discouraged and give up easily. I want to give these students an opportunity to succeed and to feel good about learning.
I teach in an ICT classroom and have a wide variety of levels, learning styles, and students who struggle due to language barriers, or other external factors.
One student in my class, who we have struggled with in regards to behavior, seems to succeed when he is reading Dogman or another graphic novel. He will sit focused and read the entire book from beginning to end without stopping. With other subjects or areas he becomes bored and then acts out.
Students in today's day and age sometimes has trouble focusing on reading. Something I noticed with my kids is that they love graphic even if they are not enjoying their book, it ruins their love of learning and reading. I want my students to be excited about reading.
My Project
These materials will help in book clubs and independent reading. When students are bored or dislike their book it leads to distractions and behavior issues. A great book can help students think more positively about reading and be more excited about learning.
I want my students to enjoy school, and to love reading time!
Many students enjoy the graphic novels which are structured more like comic books. We used to have a Scholastic subscription but this year we no longer have it and we don't have the funds to order students the books they want.
These texts could also be used in book clubs, to foster student conversation around a shared text in which they each have their own copy of the book.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
