As a first year teacher, I do my best to help all of my students learn with what resources we already have. Within my Algebra 1, Algebra 3, and Modeling the World 2 courses, there are many students who are repeating the class due to not passing it the first time or who are not at the proficiency level required to move onto the next level.
I believe that many students hate math because they have not yet had the experience of feeling successful and confident in their abilities.
In order to help my students realize that math can be and is for everyone, I would like to request technology that would make learning more accessible through being able to model concepts in different ways using an iPad and making sure instruction is loud enough to hear throughout the room using a voice amplifier. With an iPad connected to an Apple TV, I can project examples and current concepts and solve them step by step. Those notes can then be saved and shared with students, which is not possible when modeling on a white board. In some classes with up to 27 students, it can become difficult to grab everyone's attention. Using a voice amplifier would improve this situation to benefit myself and the students.
In order to increase the amount of collaboration between students and improve engagement, I would like to request for individual white boards and game buzzers. Students can use the white boards to solve problems collaboratively or to demonstrate work within math games. Students actually love math when it comes to competing in class games.
Lastly, in order to make my classroom more welcoming, I would like to request math-related posters to go up alongside student work samples.
