My Project

All my Kindergarten and first-grade students want to read and learn about the world around them. However, many of them dislike reading because they do not have basic alphabetic skills. In Kindergarten and first grade, students learn to recognize the alphabet and that there are sounds associated with each letter. Letter-sound knowledge is essential because it will help young readers decode or "sound out" words when they begin learning to read.

Letter-sound knowledge is one of the early skills that children need to become good readers.

Alphabet games will help motivate them to recognize, name, and produce letter sounds. In addition, listening to books on CDs is a fun introduction to how we read from left to right and that readers can bring books to life by reading with expression.

I work in a high-poverty school district where many incoming students have never been exposed to the alphabet or even had a book read aloud to them. By donating alphabet games and books on CDs, you will help students acquire some of the early skills that will make them good readers. You will also be helping me make their first reading experiences fun and memorable.
