Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine what it must feel like to have limited ability to communicate, while feeling stuck inside of a body that is constantly on overload from the surrounding world around you. These are just some of the symptoms that my students face everyday.

I work in an inner city school where majority of the students and families qualify as poor and therefore receive free food for their children, and most are unable to provide supplies for their child's education.

My students are between the ages of 5-7 and are typically diagnosed as having autism. Not only do my students have a hard time financially, but they also suffer from a wide range of delays such as speech, communication, behavioral, social, emotional, fine motor, gross motor, adaptive living skills, academic, and sensory. These children are constantly struggling to live life everyday while dealing with difficulties within themselves, let alone the surrounding environment. These students typically require a lot of support and resources to aid in their learning process.

My Project

My students learn very differently from those that are typically developing. Due to severe delays in speech, cognition, social, emotional, behavioral, sensory, fine motor, and gross motor skills these students require a multi sensory approach to learning, repetition, and reinforcement. These students require different adaptations that are unique to each and every learning style. Some students may require headphones to help block out additional noise in the classroom, while others might benefit from holding onto a fight or vibrating toy. In order to repeat instruction, it is important that the resources be preserved through the use of laminate. Our students do a lot of cutting and gluing to help improve fine motor skills, and since many of these children can not write, the use of pictures helps them to participate in academics.

Thank you so much for considering this project.

These resources will greatly improve the academic progress of my students for the rest of this school year and those to come. My students will have a chance to learn in an environment that is understanding of their individual needs, while providing them with the appropriate resources to give them a chance to learn and grow. With your help you can make a difference and change the lives of those who may not otherwise have a chance.
