My Students

I am a first year school counselor split between two elementary schools serving pre-K through 5th grade. Both schools I serve are high-poverty title one schools in South Carolina.

Many of my students experience family changes that hinder their ability to concentrate in class.

The most common family change that they deal with is divorce. I work with students in small groups and individually to help them cope with this challenging issue.

My Project

A very effective technique I use with children is using books in counseling. By reading children's books about divorce that my students can relate to they can begin to understand divorce, their feelings, and ways to cope. Once they learn skills to cope with the divorce they can get back to being a successful student.

These books are desperately needed to use in small group and individual counseling, to help my students cope with divorce.
