Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from Camden, New Jersey which is one of the poorest districts in the US. They are in a 9th through 12th grade ELL/Bilingual classroom. The poverty, language and limited access to resources negatively impacts these kids' academic performance as well as affects behavioral outcomes in school and other social settings. As a result of this, I wholeheartedly believe that it is the school's and society's responsibility to provide its children with the best opportunities possible to flourish in their educational endeavors.

Ben Franklin once said, "An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest."

As an educator, I strive make an investment in the education and lives of the children I teach because I know that my efforts will eventually pay dividends as these industrious students slowly evolve into the men and women they will someday become.

My Project

Technological literacy is essential if our students are to be competitive in a 21st century global economy. As a result of this, integrating technology into classroom instruction should be one of the top priorities of any good educator.

We need two Chromebooks.

Access to technology will allow students to be active participants in the learning process rather than passive recipients of information which will ensure they develop a better depth of knowledge of the concepts they are learning. It will also allow for differentiation, not only on the basis of academic levels, but on the basis of varied interests as well. My students need computers to help them gain the skills that will enable them to compete in a 21st century global economy.

My students' primary language is Spanish. Most of the materials and resources available are in the target language which is English. Having technology will further enhance their access to the state curriculum. Using the computer in a collaborative learning environment for researching, writing and mathematical application skills rather than just simple drills and practice will help foster student creativity, collaboration, and communication.

The use technology in the classroom will allow instruction to be highly customized; students can work independently or collaboratively as active participants in the learning process rather than as passive recipients of information.
