My Students

My students come to school everyday ready to learn. They love that they get to have breakfast and socialize with the rest of their peers with severe disabilities, but also love that they then get to head upstairs and see their general education teacher and class of 30 peers. To them they are having the best of both worlds.

My students, all with severe cognitive disabilities, most coming from low-income households, are participating in the general education curriculum with special education services from me, the District 75 special education teacher.

With the supports and modifications I provide my students are fully participating in class with their general education peers. When they are called on to answer a question or are seen using a support, like a calculator, to keep up with their peers they are so excited. Their smiles light up the room and their energy is contagious.

My Project

Flexible seating and sensory supports are must haves when working with children with special needs. As a first year teacher, I have so many ideas and goals for my students but I currently do not have the things I need to make my ideas come to fruition.

With this project I will be able begin to create a tool kit for my students for many years to come.

The seating options, pedals, weight belts and pencil supports will help to keep my students focused in the classroom by aiding in making them aware of their body, or where their body is in space, which is a concept many people with autism spectrum disorder and other cognitive disabilities have a hard time processing.

The Sensory tools requested will help my students relieve stress and focus, as they attempt to learn in a busy general education classroom of 30 students, and the lighting and diffusing scents will assist in providing my students the calming environment students with autism spectrum disorder need. Lastly, the educational supports and sensory learning materials will help me plan for each of my students specific needs and individualized learning styles.
