Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If you were a child, how would you feel if you didn't have basic art supplies such as crayons and markers? It's difficult for students to express themselves creatively when they don't have supplies because their school lacks funds. I want my students to experience creating their own art.

I am a 2nd grade teacher in a self contained special education classroom in the New York City Public School system.

My school is in a low-income high needs area. My students are hard-working, eager second graders who try their best to be successful in the classroom. They come to school with an open mind ready to learn. My class is a 12:1:1 special education class with over half my student population being classified as English Language Learners. They come from struggling socioeconomic backgrounds and don't have the means to purchase all the resources needed in a classroom.

My Project

I am asking for crayons, markers, colored pencils, glitter, colorful tissue paper, pipe cleaner, and storage containers. These art supplies will provide resources for me to bring art into our classroom. They will be used during art class, as well as, other core subject areas. These art supplies will help me integrate art projects into core academic subjects in order to creatively engage students in learning. Students will immerse themselves into their projects, transport to an imaginary place, and become the best artists they can be. Students will use all learning styles to increase their art skills.

Art is an important aspect of a child's education that's not utilized enough.

Being surrounded by inspiration constantly motivates. Being surrounded by work that was created with their own hands will give them a sense of accomplishment that will always be with them. I want to empower my students to love learning, what better way then by creating positive learning experiences through art.
