This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My project helps with a child's most basic and crucial need. FOOD. I have been a teacher for 3 years and every year I have had students who struggle with food insecurities. Students in homeless students, students in foster care, students who have parents with addiction issues, and homeless students. As a child I too faced days of hunger due to my my family being poor and at times homeless. I relied on free public school lunches & the kindness of teachers and friends sometimes for food. Everyday is snack time, and I make sure every student gets a snacks. Our district recently closed 3 schools and redrew boundry lines. The influx of students will be great and many are coming from poorer areas. Also, this year, our district will move to 4 day school week. I anticipate that I may need to send some students with a snack care package for the now long weekends, as I have done this in the past. My heart aches for this reality, but it is something I will always do. When a child feels safe and content they worry less about the hunger pangs and more about learning. Food will be one less worry for these littles. This can help ensure a brighter future for them!
