My Students

Do you ever wish you had more one on one time with your teacher or could learn at your own pace. I plan to address these issues and more as I spend my summer recording lessons. The ability to pause, rewind and rewatch videos allows students to spend time learning concepts they find challenging.

My students are enthusiastic eager learners that when nurtured will excel and thrive in mathematics.

However, they often lack financial and academic support from administrators needed to reach their full potential. Attending a title one school where 95% of them receive free or reduced lunch brings with it many challenges. We constantly fight budget cuts, overcrowded classrooms and poor special education support. Despite it all, my student's have a spirit of perseverance that encourages me. I will gladly work through the summer creating meaningful lessons that will level the playing field and allow them to master mathematics concepts by watching math lessons on video.

My Project

In a traditional lecture, students often try to capture what is being said instantly. They cannot stop to reflect upon what is being said, and they miss significant points because they are trying to take notes. By contrast, prerecorded videos puts lectures under the control of the students: they can watch, rewind, and fast-forward as needed. This ability is of particular value to students with accessibility concerns, especially where captions are provided for those with hearing impairments. Lectures can be viewed more than once, this will also help those for whom English is not their first language. This will allow me to devote class time to the application of concepts. I can better detect errors in thinking, particularly those that are common throughout the class. At the same time, collaborative projects will encourage social interaction among students, making it easier for them to learn from one another and those of varying skill levels to support their peers.

The value of a flipped class is that it prioritizes class time into a workshop where students inquire about lecture content, test their skills in applying knowledge, and interact with one another in hands-on activities.

During class sessions, I'm able to function as coach or facilitator, encouraging students in individual inquiry and collaborative effort. Flipping my classroom will bring about a distinctive shift in priorities from merely covering material to working to toward mastery of it.
