This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach at a school that has almost 1500 students in pre-K through 8th grade. We are considered an overcrowded school, and most classrooms have 30 plus students. 95.9% of the students are low income students. 8.2% are special education students. 19.1% are limited English learners.

This is my first year as the new orchestra teacher. I have found only a couple copies of method books for the students learn from. In my classroom, I've found a lot of poorly photocopied pages out of method books which are hard to work with and easily lost by the students. The instruments are in extremely poor condition and the majority of the instruments are not in playing condition. The school is going to try to get as many as the instruments fixed that they can afford. The school is using their available funds on instrument repairs, I know they are not going to be able to buy the students' method books. My school is in a high poverty area and the majority of the students cannot afford to buy their own book. I don’t want to tell a student that they cannot play an instrument because their parents cannot afford to buy them the method book.

I am asking you to help my students because it is important that all string students start off in a method book to learn music theory, proper technique, how to properly play their instrument, and so on. They need their own book to take home to practice. Also, by having every student working out of the same book it will help us build a strong sound and music ensemble. The books are standardized too, so a violin can play song 25 with the bass as a duet. Every book is the same, except it is geared towards their instrument.

We need the method books as soon as possible, so the students can start practice as soon as our instruments are repaired. I have over 90 students interested in playing an instrument. They are so eager to learn and are super excited! Having band at 7:45 a.m. hasn't deterred them from participating. They are unstoppable and determined to join orchestra. I am amazed by the dedication I’ve encountered so far from these students. Please help them by providing method books for them.
