Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My name is Ms. Harkins, and I am a 16-year veteran teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools. In my 5th-grade math class, I work with about 110 fantastic and talented students who work hard and are striving to prepare for middle school mathematics and pre-algebra. My incredible school is located in southwest Baltimore, and we work hard to provide students and families with the tools they need to be successful here at school and beyond the neighborhood and zip code. We are a Title I school, and about 85% of students are living in poverty. About 55% of our students are from immigrant families.

Our school is a community school and is a hub of activity in the neighborhood.

We have an active food pantry, STEAM and Community Center, and partnerships that sustain our population. I have been a proud member of this school community for seven years and have been honored to be a part of the hardworking staff that goes above and beyond to support our deserving and talented students.

My Project

These materials would mean everything for my classroom! Students are asked to bring in basic supplies, but many cannot afford to do so. Parents strain to buy materials for multiple children and even extended family. Many of the families are working multiple jobs to support themselves, and these materials would help offset some of those costs.

The materials I'm asking for here may seem basic, but they would make a world of difference to my students and me and would keep us on track and moving in an organized way throughout the year!

Specifically, composition notebooks serve as our interactive tools in class and place for students to capture and practice math content. Teachers rely on dry erase markers to post objectives and messages on the board as well as to model content every day. Students use dry erase boards daily in my class on their individual whiteboards to show me their understanding of math concepts. Post-It Notes are used daily to reflect on our learning as well as to collaborate and give peers feedback.

I am supporting over 100 students in four classes next school year, and we need materials for all of these eager students! If you can give us assistance with any of these resources, it is greatly appreciated and we promise to put them to good use!
