My Students

Can you imagine the shame and embarrassment of having to tell your teacher that your mother cannot afford to buy basic school supplies such as books and pencils? Well, that's the challenge I face at the start of each school year with my students.

I am a Special Education teacher in urban New York.

All of my students are from low income families. All are on the free school lunch program. In spite of the fact that they are in a special needs class, my students are encouraged to always strive for the best. At the start of the school year I send home a supply list with my students unfortunately I always get disappointing response from the parents. usually I am the one who ends up supplying them with books, pencils, crayons and other supplies that they will need for the school year.

My Project

My students need a notebook for each subject, they need pencils, crayons scissors, glue, markers etc. in order for them to have a successful school year. They will learn to write independently on various topic, respond to literature that is read to them. They need math journals among other supplies to ensure that all assignments are completed. I was able to purchase some of the supplies with the limited contribution that I get from the city and with my own money. I need help in order to keep supplying my students with the things they need for their education. When they come to school without pencils it is my responsibility to supply them with one. Getting an education is their only hope for a better future.

Being poor is not an excuse, all children deserve to get an education.

As a teacher it is my job to ensure that my students are taught in a conducive environment. Therefore with the help of a generous and kind donor I will have the supplies I need to help my students and their parents get the supplies they need for the school year.
