Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach science to 120 brilliant and energetic 8th graders. My scientists have a strong desire to learn despite the daunting challenges they face every day, including gang violence, hunger, and inadequate housing and health care.

This year, my students have been studying very hard to take the 8th Grade Science and the Earth Science Regents state tests.

These tests emphasize the skills of interpreting and analyzing diagrams, charts, graphs, and data. It is particularly challenging to help my scientists develop these skills without the availability of handouts. In addition, many of my students are several grade levels behind. It is therefore even more important for them to get the most out of class time so they can catch up so they are ready for high school and college. Without handouts, my students waste valuable time copying problems and diagrams from the board instead of using their time to practice answering questions and applying their new science knowledge and skills.

My Project

Giving each of my students their own handout every day will give them the opportunity to get even more accomplished during class. They will be able to write directly on the handout, save time from copying, and have access to diagrams and recent practice test questions that cannot be found in our outdated textbooks. Unfortunately, teachers are unable to make photocopies at my school, and refills for printers and desktop photocopiers are unavailable. With a refill supply of toner, a refill drum, and a desktop copier in my room, I will be able to make daily handouts for all of my students, with practice problems similar to those they will see on the science tests in June. These handouts will maximize time on-task, help them efficiently practice essential science skills, and provide resources they can take home and study.

Your support will help ensure that my science scholars will have access to photocopies that will help make the best use of their time in school.
