My Students

Do you remember answering questions correctly in class or participating in discussions, while receiving praise from peers and teachers? For my students, this is a bit easier said than done. To support our school's mission statement, I've come up with a way to ensure that students own their learning!

Located in Washington D.C., my students are in a neighborhood in which resources are at a minimum.

But you'd never be able to guess it in the classroom! My students are truly like sponges. They have the motivation and desire to learn material, but they process it in a different way. A way that requires more than just pencil and paper, although those items are very helpful! At times, this can be a bit discouraging for them. As their teacher, I know that they are all capable of greatness. Already, we are off to a great start with a newly renovated school. Although the reconstruction is not quite complete, we are able to see the light at the end of the tunnel! I am hoping that the same can be said with the work that is being produced inside of the classroom! I want my students to be proud of the work that they are producing!

My Project

We can use colored pencils, crayons, and construction paper to create non linguistic representations of material that has been presented in the classroom. This is a huge process for my students as it allows me to check for understanding of the material presented, and it allows them to take ownership of the work that they have created. For example, a vocabulary definition can be supported in the form of a picture, as opposed to a written meaning. Some of my students also struggle a bit with the writing process. By producing a non linguistic representation, they are able to verbally engage in a discussion based on non linguistic representations. Calculators will also assist my students with processing mathematical concepts that have been introduced in class. They will also help to assist students with homework while serving as an accommodation on tests. A few office supplies such as hole punches, staplers, and staples will assist me in keeping things organized throughout the school year.

This donation will be helpful to my classroom because it can assist with increasing my students self esteem as it relates to approaching and completing their work.

By allowing alternative ways to produce the same content as their peers, my students will be able to engage in the same discussions as their classmates, and make great contributions to their classroom environment!
