My students are a group of energetic first graders who come to school each day eager to learn. They attend a high poverty Title I school in rural Georgia and over 85% of my children live in poverty. Regardless of their socioeconomic status, these students are young, ambitious, and smart. Despite their hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best.
Unfortunately for my children and I, our school closed in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
We did not know at the time we would be closing for the rest of the year. I gave them learning packets to take home that would last for a couple of weeks. We thought we would be coming back to school. My children were becoming successful with their reading and math. Now we are making learning packets each week for the parents to pick up.
My Project
Do you recall being unable to complete an assignment due to a lack of resources? This is true for many of my first graders now with distance learning but still, they are engaging in their learning with what they have.
Their love for learning supersedes any obstacle that has presented itself so far!
These math journals will ensure they are practicing addition, subtraction, measuring and so much more. It gives them the opportunity to continue strengthening their math skills, away from technology, which has been much of their reality this past month. The bubbles are a little reward for them to celebrate all the work they are doing at home. These future leaders are not letting anything get in the way of their learning, so I would love your help in keeping their brains growing! Thank you!
